Coastal Voices Men’s Choir came into existence in 2011 to support and promote male choral singing on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. As the men gained choral skills, the group became a permanent performing vocal ensemble. A name was chosen and the choir debuted at the Memory Lane Heritage Village in Lake Charlotte in the summer of 2012. In the 2014 season the choir premiered the song “Come with Me” composed by choir member and songwriter Jim Reid. Gary Ewer, well-known educator, conductor and composer arranged the work for the choir. The “Come with Me” project was supported by a grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
During the last five seasons the choir has offered open house rehearsals along with at least two concerts during each season. In 2015 the men were featured in the Aeolian Singers presentation “Songs and Sayings” in Halifax and Lunenburg. In the 2017 season the Choir premiered the piece “Voices Answering Back”, written for the Choir and Artistic Director Janet Gaskin by Accompanist John Plant. In 2017 the Choir also performed in concert with Men of the Deeps. In the 2019 season the concert locations spanned the Eastern Shore from East Preston to Sheet Harbour. The ~20+ member choir has a six month season from January to the end of May or early June.
Janet Gaskin was the Choir’s founding Artistic Director and led its development into the 2018 season. Ross Thompson has taken the helm as Artistic Director. John Plant is our Accompanist. John has composed and arranged several pieces for the Choir’s repertoire.
Choir operations are overseen by a Board of Directors elected from and by the membership. Blair Lopes is the President.
